We would like to acknowledge the many resources that Maryland offers for value-added producers and hope that what we are providing here compliments those existing resources.
The University of Maryland Extension
The University of Maryland Extension boasts a “one stop shop for the 21st century agricultural/natural resource entrepreneur” with the Maryland Rural Enterprise Development Center (MREDC). The Center offers a variety of business development and planning tools, workbooks and guidelines, including a detailed section on food processing.
Maryland Agricultural and Resource-Based Industry Development Corporation (MARBIDCO)
The Maryland Agricultural and Resource-Based Industry Development Corporation (MARBIDCO) is a quasi-public corporation with the mission to “to help Maryland’s farm, forest, and seafood businesses achieve sustainable viability and profitability now and into the future.” MARBIDCO offers loan, financing and development programs.
Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation (MALPF)
MALPF is one of the most successful programs of its kind in the nation. The Foundation “purchases agricultural preservation easements that forever restrict development on prime farmland and woodland.” Protection of agricultural land is a key strategic resource in Maryland for maintaining our agricultural past, present and future. These easements may restrict value-added activities, however, and need to be well documented & understood before any changes can be made to farms & properties.
